I always struggle with cropping, and this shot is no exception. I’ve cropped it every which way and still not entirely happy with any of them, other than the original I suppose. Here’s the original taken of a canal in Belgium early in the morning.
Now my first crop - a square crop of course. This is ok, but it just lacks some depth I feel
So to try and emphasise the width of the cana I thought of a 2:1 crop instead:
I like this, it’s got the width I wanted and the reflections, but I feel like I’m banging my head on top of the frame, and the tree line is too cut off. So here’s another 2:1 crop with a slightly lower horizon line
So I get the tree line at the top, but loosing those reflections - argh.
For me the orginal shot in this case has the right balance between trees and reflections and the depth and width I saw that morning
